Water Sports — Where to Watch
Swimming, diving, water polo, open-water swimming, rowing, canoeing and sailing are not one product and they do not share a rights package, with one exception: they all come together inside the Olympic Games, which is a single package covering every pool and every lake. That is why the Games are the one place a casual viewer will actually find this sport, and why the rest of the year looks thin by comparison.
Outside the Games the calendar is run by the federations — world championships, continental championships and the world cup circuits — and those are sold event by event, often to public broadcasters. The honest summary is that aquatics gets a lot of free coverage in the countries that care about it, and almost none anywhere else, and that our research could not identify the world championships rights holder in most markets at all. This page says what we could verify and leaves the rest blank.
| Country | Who shows it | Free option |
|---|---|---|
| Italy | Rai carries swimming on its sports output. Swimming world championship finals involving Italian athletes, or held in Italy, are on the national list of protected events — and so are water polo world championship semi-finals and finals involving Italy, where Italy’s list is unusually specific. | RaiPlay and Rai 1/2/3, free and geo-locked to Italy. Italy’s listed-events rules require free access to reach at least 80% of the population. |
| Spain | RTVE carries swimming through Teledeporte. Spanish participation in world and European swimming championships is among the events the Spanish catalogue may include. | RTVE Play and Teledeporte, free, geo-locked to Spain. |
| Portugal | RTP carries rowing and canoeing through its sports hub, alongside the volleyball European championships and other events. | RTP Play, free. The World Sprint Canoeing Championships and the European Rowing Championships are both named on its free sports page. |
| United Kingdom | The BBC holds the Olympic rights, and swimming at the Games sits inside them. We could not confirm a UK rights holder for the world championships outside the Games. | Olympic swimming on BBC iPlayer, free with a TV licence. The BBC does not show every session of a Games, and the rest sits with Warner Bros. Discovery, whose sport coverage streams on HBO Max. |
| Germany | ARD and ZDF carry aquatics as part of their sports programming and hold the Olympic rights to 2032 under the European Broadcasting Union deal. | ARD and ZDF, free, with no login, geo-restricted to Germany. |
| Canada | The Olympic rights sit with the national broadcasters for the Games themselves. | CBC Gem, free and ad-supported, carries an Olympic Channel stream. It is the strongest genuinely free live-sport option in Canada, though the Games are the main aquatics it carries. |
| United States | NBC holds the Games, streaming them on Peacock. We could not confirm a US rights holder for the aquatics world championships outside the Games. | None confirmed. Peacock Premium, at about $12.99 a month, is the streaming route to the Games; the cheaper Select tier carries no live sport. |
| Australia | Free-to-air coverage of the Games sits with the commercial networks, with streaming alongside it. | 7plus, free and ad-supported, carries the Olympics. |
| India | DD Sports lists national championships in swimming among the events it covers, alongside hockey, athletics, badminton, archery and wrestling. | Doordarshan and DD Sports, free-to-air since 2003 and on DD Free Dish, with a free stream on Prasar Bharati’s own live TV page. |
| China | CCTV runs the national sports coverage, with CCTV-16 as its dedicated Olympic channel. | CCTV, free-to-air, with a free stream on its own site and app and no login shown. It blocks viewers outside mainland China. |
| Japan | The Japan Consortium — NHK plus the commercial networks — holds the Olympics, the Paralympics and the Asian Games. | NHK and the commercial networks, free-to-air and geo-locked to Japan. |
| South Korea | KBS, SBS and MBC carry the Games free-to-air; TVING holds the streaming rights to the 2026 Winter Games and the Summer Games from 2028. | KBS, SBS and MBC, free-to-air. |
| Latin America | Claro Sports carries the Games from Milano Cortina 2026 onward; ViX carried the Milano Cortina Games with a free tier and a Premium one. | Claro Sports, free on its own site and its YouTube channel, geo-locked to the region. |
Sailing and rowing
Sailing and rowing are organised separately from swimming and have their own small rights picture. Both mostly appear as a line inside a general sports package rather than as a property anyone buys on its own, which is why the verified options are so few.
| Event or country | Who shows it | Free option |
|---|---|---|
| SailGP, Switzerland | blue Sport, the Swisscom sports service, carries SailGP among a portfolio built mainly around football. It requires a free Swisscom login, but no Swisscom subscription. | None. There is no free trial, only an introductory price for new annual subscribers. |
| America’s Cup, New Zealand | TVNZ carries the America’s Cup among its live sport, alongside provincial rugby, UFC and the NFL. | TVNZ+ is free and ad-supported, but it is freemium rather than fully free — some content sits behind its paid Passes tiers, so check before assuming the sailing is in the free part. |
| Rowing and canoeing, Portugal | RTP carries both through its sports hub. | RTP Play, free: the World Sprint Canoeing Championships and the European Rowing Championships 2026 are named on its sports page. |
| Everywhere else | Not confirmed in our research. | None confirmed. |
Can you watch it free?
At the Games, in much of Europe, yes — and by law rather than by commercial choice. Italy protects swimming finals involving Italian athletes, and separately protects water polo world semi-finals and finals involving Italy. Spain’s catalogue may include Spanish participation in the world and European swimming championships. Both countries put the sport on a public broadcaster’s free stream, which is geo-locked to the country that paid for it.
Outside the Games, the free routes we could confirm are specific rather than general: RTP Play for rowing and sprint canoeing in Portugal, DD Sports for national swimming championships in India, and TVNZ+ for the America’s Cup in New Zealand, with the caveat that TVNZ+ is freemium rather than free.
What we could not find matters as much as what we did. There is no confirmed free route to the aquatics world championships anywhere, and no confirmed rights holder for them in most markets. Anyone promising you a free world championships stream is describing something we could not verify exists.
For the Games themselves, the multi-sport events page has the full country-by-country picture, because the Games are sold as one package and the broadcaster is the same whether you are watching the swimming, the athletics or the gymnastics.
The cheapest legal route
- Italy. Nothing. RaiPlay is free and carries swimming, and Italian law protects the world championship finals involving Italian athletes.
- Spain. Nothing. RTVE Play and Teledeporte are free, and Spanish participation in world and European swimming championships is on the events catalogue.
- Portugal. Nothing. RTP Play is free and names the World Sprint Canoeing Championships and the European Rowing Championships on its sports page.
- India. Nothing. DD Sports is free-to-air and covers national swimming championships.
- Germany. Nothing. ARD and ZDF need no login and hold the Olympic rights to 2032.
- Anywhere the Games are the point. Find your public broadcaster first. If your country protects the Games, it probably already has the aquatics you want, and paying for a general sports tier to watch the swimming on its own is rarely worth it.
