Football — Where to Watch
Football is the most fragmented sport there is. Rights are sold twice over: first league by league, then territory by territory. The Premier League, LaLiga, Serie A and the Champions League are four separate deals, and each of those four deals is cut into dozens of national ones. So the honest answer to “where can I watch the football?” is that it depends on the competition and on which side of a border you are standing.
The league pages below go into the detail for each competition. This page is the map: who carries what, in the ten markets most people are asking about, and what is genuinely free.
| Country | Who shows it | Free option |
|---|---|---|
| UK | Sky Sports (about 215 Premier League games) and TNT Sports (about 52), the latter through HBO Max. TNT has the Champions League; Sky takes the Europa League from 2027-28. | BBC Match of the Day highlights only. No free live league football. |
| US | NBC and Peacock for the Premier League; Paramount+ for the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League. | None confirmed for league football. |
| Canada | DAZN Canada — Premier League, Champions League, Bundesliga, LaLiga, Serie A, EFL. TSN Premium adds LaLiga; Sportsnet+ carries some football. | None confirmed. |
| Australia | Stan Sport — all 380 Premier League matches, the FA Cup and the UEFA club competitions. | 9Now carries marquee Premier League matches free with an account. |
| Germany | Sky, through the WOW streaming service, and DAZN. Both hold Bundesliga packages, so you often need both. | ARD and ZDF for Germany’s matches at World Cups and Euros, which must be free by law. |
| France | Ligue 1+ became the main Ligue 1 broadcaster from 2026-27. Canal+ holds the Champions League exclusively to 2031 and all of the Premier League. | TF1 for France internationals; M6 has carried the Champions League final, which French law requires to be free. |
| India | JioHotstar — Premier League, Indian Super League and much else. | Doordarshan, for events of national importance: the World Cup opening match, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final, and Asia Cup matches involving India. |
| Brazil | Globo with Premiere, Disney+ with the ESPN channels, and Prime Video. | CazéTV on YouTube — free and legal, but geo-locked to Brazil. |
| South Africa | SuperSport on DStv. The Sports package carries every Premier League and PSL match. | None confirmed. |
| MENA | beIN Sports holds the Premier League across 24 countries to the end of 2027-28, with TOD as its streaming service. | Unclear. Thmanyah now carries Saudi football; whether its channels are free-to-air is unverified. |
Can you watch it free?
Rarely, and never the biggest league matches. Football is the sport that broadcasters pay most for, so almost all of it sits behind a subscription. What free coverage exists falls into three groups:
- Highlights. The BBC has Match of the Day and Champions League highlights; every major league runs its own YouTube channel. This is free, legal and widely available, and it is not live.
- Selected matches a broadcaster chose to open up. 9Now in Australia shows a small number of Premier League games free. CazéTV in Brazil shows a large amount of Brazilian football free on YouTube. Both are geo-locked to their own country, which is the whole point.
- National-team football. Countries that protect listed events require the biggest international matches to be free. Germany, France, Italy, Spain and India all have such rules; the specific events differ in each.
The cheapest legal route
- One league, one country. Buy the single local rights holder rather than a bundle. In the UK a NOW day pass costs £14.99 and covers a whole match day.
- Serie A. DAZN carries all 380 matches in Italy, and the same service carries Serie A in several other markets.
- Premier League outside the UK. If you are in Canada, DAZN is the broadest single subscription; if you are in Australia, Stan Sport has the lot.
- Nothing at all, or highlights only. A public broadcaster plus the league’s own YouTube channel covers a surprising amount.
DAZN is the single most misunderstood service in this market, because it holds domestic football rights in some countries and none at all in others. The country-by-country breakdown is the fastest way to avoid a wasted subscription.
