Watching Sport in Australia
Australia's sports market just went through the cleanest example of a switch you will find anywhere: a streaming service died, and its rights moved to a rival. If you have read anything about Optus Sport, put it down. The rest of the market is a comfortable duopoly — Kayo for the domestic codes, Stan Sport for the football — with an unusually generous free layer on top, because Australian law keeps some sport on free television.
- Optus Sport no longer exists as a football service. It exited in 2025 and assigned its rights to Nine Entertainment on 30 June 2025. Stan Sport now holds Australian Premier League streaming rights through 2027-28. Plenty of guides still send people to Optus Sport.
- There is no standalone DAZN service in Australia. DAZN bought Foxtel — the deal completed on 2 April 2025 — and runs the Australian business through the Foxtel brands: Kayo, BINGE and Hubbl. You cannot subscribe to "DAZN Australia"; you subscribe to Kayo.
- Kayo renamed its plans and raised prices on 5 February 2026. Kayo One is now Standard and Kayo Basic is now Premium. Anyone quoting those old plan names is working from a stale page.
What you can watch free
Australia is one of the better free markets in the English-speaking world, because the anti-siphoning rules keep a share of the big events on free-to-air television. The free broadcasters then put that content on their own streaming apps, which is why this section is longer than you might expect.
| Sport | Where it is free |
|---|---|
| Premier League | 9Now carries free marquee matches, simulcast from the Channel 9 and 9Gem feed. They are typically the 12:30 and 15:00 UK kick-offs. A free account is required and the exact number of matches per round is not published |
| NRL | 9Now, free with a free account |
| Cricket | 7plus carries the Tests and the Big Bash, free and ad-supported |
| AFL | 7plus carries AFL coverage free |
| Tennis | 9Now carries the Australian Open |
| Olympics and general sport | 7plus carries the Olympics, ABC iview carries selected live sport from the public broadcaster and needs no login at all |
The main services, and what they cost
Prices in Australian dollars, dated September 2026. The Kayo figures changed in February 2026 and the Stan figure is an add-on rather than a total, which is where most comparisons go wrong.
| Service | Carries | From | Trial |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kayo Sports | Every AFL and NRL game, Australian and international cricket, F1, Supercars, Super Rugby, the Wallabies, NBA, NFL. This is the DAZN route in Australia | Standard A$29.99/month, Premium A$45.99/month | No standard trial. Eligible newcomers have been offered a 7-day trial or a first month for $1 — check at signup. Kayo Freebies is free content with no card required |
| Stan Sport | The Premier League, all 380 matches, through 2027-28, plus the FA Cup, the UEFA club competitions, the J.League, the NWSL, rugby and tennis | A$20/month as an add-on to a Stan base plan. Most people end up paying around A$32/month in total, depending on which base tier they take | No — Stan Sport has no free trial in 2026 |
| Paramount+ Australia | The A-League, the Socceroos and the Matildas, and some football and rugby. We are re-checking the exact 2026 rights, so treat this row as indicative | Paid tier; Network 10 and 10 Play remain free-to-air | Not confirmed |
| Foxtel and BINGE | BINGE is the entertainment streaming arm. Sport sits on Kayo rather than on BINGE | Priced separately | Not confirmed |
| Optus Sport | Nothing. It no longer exists as a football service | — | — |
The Optus row is in the table on purpose. It is the single most common mistake on Australian sports pages, and it is worth seeing in writing that the service is gone.
Who shows what
- Premier League — Stan Sport has all 380 matches through 2027-28, with the marquee fixtures simulcast free on 9Now. This is the rights package that used to sit with Optus Sport.
- AFL and NRL — Kayo, through Fox Sports. 7plus and 9Now carry the free-to-air share of both codes.
- Cricket — Kayo has the Australian and international rights; 7plus carries the Tests and the Big Bash free.
- Rugby — split. Kayo has Super Rugby and the Wallabies internationals; Stan Sport carries rugby as part of its package.
- Formula 1 and Supercars — Kayo.
- NBA and NFL — Kayo. There is no Australian equivalent of the American Sunday Ticket situation; the league packages sit inside the Kayo subscription.
- Tennis — Stan Sport carries tennis through its package, and the Australian Open is on 9Now free.
- A-League, Socceroos, Matildas — Paramount+ Australia, with free-to-air coverage on Network 10 and 10 Play. We are verifying which matches land where for the current season.
The cheapest legal routes
- Free, and worth checking first: 9Now for the Premier League marquee matches, NRL and the Australian Open; 7plus for cricket, AFL and the Olympics. Between them they cover a surprising amount of the year.
- Domestic codes: Kayo Standard at A$29.99 is the only route to a full AFL or NRL season.
- Football: Stan Sport. Budget around A$32/month in total, not A$20, and remember there is no trial to test it with.
- Before you subscribe to Kayo: check Kayo Freebies. It needs no card and it does carry free content.
- If you are chasing a $1 first month: it has been offered to eligible new Kayo customers, but it is a promotion rather than a permanent trial, so read the terms at signup.
