EFL Championship — Where to Watch

The English Football League is the second tier of English football plus its cup competition, and it is unusual in having a genuinely free live slice in its home market. In the UK the bulk of the matches sit behind a Sky Sports subscription, but ITV carries a package free-to-air, which makes the Championship one of the few leagues in Europe where a free-to-air broadcaster shows live league football every season.

One thing worth untangling before the table: the EFL is not the FA Cup. The FA Cup is a separate competition, held separately, and in the UK it is shared between TNT Sports and the BBC. The EFL's own cup competition, the Carabao Cup, follows the pattern of the league — Sky has the matches, ITV has a free slice and the final.

What we left out. English clubs have historically run their own overseas streaming services for fans outside the UK, and a lot of guides describe them in detail. We could not verify the current scope, pricing or availability of any of them, so this page says nothing about them rather than repeat a description we cannot stand behind.

Can you watch it free?

In the UK, partly — and it is the best free EFL coverage anywhere. ITV's package covers 10 live league matches a season plus highlights, and 10 Carabao Cup matches with the final among them. All of it is free with ads on ITVX, and on-demand ITVX needs no TV licence, though its live channels do.

That is a genuine free route to live English league football, which is rare. What it is not is comprehensive: 10 matches out of a very long season.

Everywhere else — nothing we could confirm. There is no free live Championship football outside the UK that we could verify.

How we define "free". Every option on this site is either a public broadcaster, a free ad-supported tier, an official free trial, or a rights-holder's own channel. We do not list or link to unlicensed rebroadcasts. Note that a VPN does not make a stream legal: reaching a service licensed for another country normally breaches that service's terms, and the bigger platforms actively block it.

The cheapest legal route

UK, occasional viewer — a NOW day pass at about £14.99 for 24 hours of the Sky Sports channels. NOW carries Sky Sports without the 24-month contract that Sky itself requires.
UK, free — check the ITV schedule first. If one of the 10 live matches is your match, you pay nothing.
Canada — DAZN Canada covers the EFL, the Carabao Cup, the Premier League, LaLiga, Serie A and the Bundesliga in one subscription, which is better value than buying for the Championship alone.
India — FanCode's unlimited pass at about Rs 199/month covers the Championship and a lot of other football.
Nordics — Viaplay holds the EFL to 2028 alongside the Premier League, so one subscription covers both English tiers.

Why the free slice exists

The EFL sells its rights in packages the same way the Premier League does, and one of those packages is reserved for free-to-air television. That is why a competition whose main broadcaster is a pay channel still turns up on ITV: the free slice is a condition of the deal, not a favour. The same structure applies to the Carabao Cup final, which is why the first trophy of the English season is available to anyone with a television. Note that the 3pm Saturday blackout still applies, so the Saturday afternoon league fixtures are not shown live inside the UK at any price.

Is there a free trial for the EFL?

Not that we could verify. Sky Sports, NOW and DAZN have no free trial for their sports tiers, though the free ITV coverage in the UK is available without any subscription at all.
