Watching Sport in Canada
Canada is a two-company country with a third one hiding inside it. Domestic rights belong to TSN and Sportsnet, with the NHL split between them, and almost everything else is a fight over what is left. The exception is DAZN Canada, which is the broadest single sports subscription in the country and completely unlike the DAZN that Americans get. If you have read anything about DAZN in the United States, set it aside now.
- Sportsnet+ raises its prices on 22 September 2026. The reported new figures are C$269.99/year for Standard and C$344.99/year for Premium, up from C$249.99 and C$324.99. Anything you read quoting the old numbers was written before this week.
- National Monday-night NHL games went back to Sportsnet for 2026-27, after two seasons on Prime Video. Prime still has the national Wednesday-night games, in English and French.
- TSN+ no longer exists as a brand. The streaming service is now sold as TSN Standard and TSN Premium. Guides quoting "TSN+ at $7.99" or "TSN Direct" are years out of date.
- MLS Season Pass is gone — discontinued after the 2025 season, the same change as in the US. MLS now comes with a standard Apple TV subscription.
What you can watch free
Canada is unusual among the big English-speaking markets in having one genuinely strong free option, and it belongs to the public broadcaster.
| Sport | Where it is free |
|---|---|
| NHL | CBC Gem, on its free ad-supported tier, carries Hockey Night in Canada games sub-licensed to CBC. We are re-checking exactly which windows remain on CBC for 2026-27 now that Rogers has sub-licensed Wednesday nights to Prime Video |
| Olympics and amateur sport | CBC Gem carries a live Olympic Channel, plus events such as FEI equestrian competition |
| Whatever CBC holds over the air | Free with an antenna, no account, no app |
| Everything else | Highlights and clips only. TSN and Sportsnet give away plenty of both, but live games need a subscription or a TV-provider login |

| DAZN Canada | The broad one: NFL including Game Pass and RedZone, Premier League, all three UEFA club competitions, Bundesliga, LaLiga, Serie A, the EFL, Carabao Cup, NFL Network, MLB Network, UFC, boxing, LIV Golf, tennis and motorsport | Standard and Ultimate tiers. DAZN does not publish the CAD prices on its plan page; third parties quote roughly C$24.99 and C$49.99 on a 12-month commitment. Unverified | No. The "$1 for Ultimate" offer is a promotion, not a free trial |
| CBC Gem | Hockey Night in Canada windows, an Olympic Channel, amateur sport | Free, ad-supported. A Premium ad-free tier exists at a price we could not verify | Not applicable — the free tier needs no card |
| Amazon Prime Video | National Wednesday-night NHL games, in English and French, under a 12-year sub-licensing deal with Rogers | Prime Canada, quoted around C$9.99/month. Unverified | Trials vary by market — check amazon.ca |
| Apple TV | MLS, every match, included | Priced on apple.com | Yes — 7 days, new subscribers |

Who shows what
- NHL — the centre of the market. Sportsnet holds the national rights and the Monday-night package for 2026-27; TSN carries regional games and the CFL, NBA and F1 alongside them; Prime Video has Wednesday nights; CBC gets the Hockey Night in Canada windows it sub-licenses; RDS and TVA Sports handle French. You will often need two of these, not one.
- NFL — TSN Standard, with RedZone and extra games on TSN Premium. DAZN Canada's subscription includes NFL Game Pass, so it carries RedZone and the multiview options as part of the base price rather than as an add-on.
- NBA — TSN, with a further 75 games on the Premium tier. Sportsnet covers the Raptors.
- MLB — Sportsnet, which is where the Blue Jays live, with MLB Network available through DAZN Canada.
- Soccer — DAZN Canada is the deepest single option, with the Premier League, the Champions League, the Bundesliga, LaLiga, Serie A and the EFL. TSN Premium includes all LaLiga matches. Sportsnet+ carries soccer too.
- Formula 1 — TSN. Note that Apple TV's Formula 1 rights are a US deal only; do not expect them in Canada.
- UFC and boxing — DAZN Canada.
- Tennis and golf — TSN Premium adds the tennis slams and PGA Tour Live, which is where a lot of Canadian viewers get them.
The cheapest legal routes
- Nothing at all: CBC Gem's free tier. It is the best free sports option in the country and the only one worth planning around.
- One sport, year round: TSN Standard at C$24.99 covers the NFL, the NBA, F1 and regional NHL in one subscription.
- Football: DAZN Canada. The Premier League and the Champions League together in one place is cheaper than assembling them elsewhere, and it includes NFL Game Pass as a bonus.
- Hockey, free: check the CBC Gem schedule first. If your game is not there, Sportsnet+ is the paid route.
- Read the $1 offer carefully. DAZN's "Try Ultimate for $1" is a promotional price, not a free trial, and the terms matter.
