Athletics — Where to Watch
Athletics is a public-broadcaster sport more than a pay-television one, and that is the key to reading the listings. There is no league and no season-long package. The calendar is a set of separate properties: the world championships, which belong to the sport’s governing body; the European championships; the Diamond League meetings, each of which is its own event; and the Olympic Games, which sit in a completely different rights structure because they are sold as a multi-sport package.
Because so much of it lands on national broadcasters, athletics has better free coverage than its audience figures would suggest — and much worse availability outside the country in question, because every one of those free streams is geo-blocked.
| Country | Who shows it | Free option |
|---|---|---|
| UK | The BBC holds the Olympic rights and carries athletics as part of them. We could not confirm which broadcaster holds the world championships or the Diamond League. | Olympic athletics on BBC iPlayer, free with a TV licence. Note that the BBC does not show every session of a Games. |
| Germany | ARD and ZDF hold the Olympic rights to 2032 under the European Broadcasting Union deal, and carry athletics on their sports programming. | ARD and ZDF, free, with no login. Their streams are geo-restricted to Germany. |
| Italy | Sky Italia carries athletics, with the Olympic rights inside the EBU arrangement. DAZN Italia carries the Eurosport channels. | RaiPlay, free, carries athletics and winter sport. Italy’s listed-events list also covers athletics world championship finals involving Italian athletes or held in Italy. |
| Spain | Movistar Plus+ carries athletics, with the Olympic coverage inside its sports packages. | RTVE Play and Teledeporte, free, carry athletics and swimming. The Spanish list of events of general interest covers Spanish participation in world and European athletics championships. |
| France | Canal+ and the other French broadcasters hold the general sports rights. | The world athletics championships are on the French listed-events list, which requires full live free coverage with narrow exceptions. France also has a caveat worth knowing: listed does not always mean free in practice, because if no free channel bids the event can end up pay-only. |
| Poland | TVP Sport is the free public offer. | TVP. Poland’s new listed-events regulation adds the world and European athletics championships, but it only enters force on 11 September 2027 — for the 2026/27 season the older list still applies. |
| Sweden | Viaplay carries the general sports calendar. | SVT Play, free, carries athletics among its public-service sport. The specific 2026 rights list was not confirmed in our research. |
| Czechia | Oneplay carries the general sports packages. | Czech Television is free, and it has historically carried athletics and biathlon. We could not confirm its current live athletics rights. |
| India | Sony Sports Ten 1 lists the World Athletics Championships among the events on its English channel. | None confirmed. Sony’s coverage is sold through SonyLIV, which does not advertise a free trial. |
| Sri Lanka | Channel Eye, run by the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation, lists athletics among its sports. | Channel Eye offers a free webcast with 48 hours of catch-up and no paywall. |
| Canada | The Olympic rights sit with the Canadian broadcasters for the Games themselves. | CBC Gem is free, ad-supported, and carries an Olympic Channel stream. |
| United States | None confirmed. Our research did not identify the US rights holder for the world championships or the Diamond League, so we are not naming one. | None confirmed. Olympic coverage in the US sits with the broadcaster that holds the Games, which is a separate deal from the athletics calendar. |
Can you watch it free?
In most of Europe, and almost always by law rather than by commercial choice. Italy, Spain, France and Poland all protect the sport in some form: Italy lists world championship finals involving Italian athletes, Spain lists Spanish participation in the world and European championships, France lists the world championships outright, and Poland has just added both the world and European championships, though not until the 2027 regulation takes effect.
What that gives a viewer is the biggest meetings on a public broadcaster’s free stream, in the country that protects them. What it does not give is a global answer. The German free coverage is geo-locked to Germany, the Italian coverage to Italy, and so on down the list.
The cheapest legal route
- The world championships, in a country that protects them. Free. France lists them outright; Italy and Spain protect them where a home athlete is involved.
- Germany. ARD and ZDF are free and need no login, and they carry athletics through the same rights package that covers the Olympics to 2032.
- Sri Lanka. Channel Eye is free with no paywall, which is unusual for a sports stream and needs no account.
- The Olympic Games. Free on the national public broadcaster in most of Europe and in Canada, subject to whatever licence fee your country charges. The Games are not on the athletics calendar and are not part of any athletics subscription.
- India. SonyLIV is the paid route for the world championships; there is no free option we could confirm.
Because so many of these are protected events, the practical advice is to check your own public broadcaster before buying anything. In the countries listed above, the biggest meetings of the year are already free — and in the countries not listed, we could not confirm who has them.
