Multi-Sport Events — Where to Watch
Every other sport on this site is sold one competition at a time. The Olympic Games are not. They are sold as a single package covering every event, every arena, every day of the fortnight, and that single fact is what makes them the most valuable property in television — and, oddly, one of the easiest to watch free.
The reason is the European Broadcasting Union. Public broadcasters buy the Games together, not one by one, and they buy them for the long term: the current deal runs to 2032. In several countries that means the Games must be free by law as well, because a Games is on the listed-events list almost everywhere in Europe. Outside Europe the picture differs, but the pattern repeats — a public or free-to-air broadcaster usually has the Games, and a pay service has the everything-else version.
| Country | Who shows the Games | Free option |
|---|---|---|
| UK | The BBC has the free package to 2032 under the EBU deal, but it does not show every session. The rest sits with Warner Bros. Discovery, whose sporting coverage now streams on HBO Max. | BBC iPlayer, with a TV licence. This is a genuine free route to the Games, just not to all of them. |
| Germany | ARD and ZDF hold the free rights to 2032 under the same EBU arrangement. | ARD and ZDF, free, with no login. Their streams are geo-restricted to Germany. |
| Switzerland | SRF holds the Games exclusively for 2026–2032, live and highlights. | SRF, free, geo-locked to Switzerland. |
| Nordics | DR, SVT, NRK, Yle and RÚV carry the Games under a joint public-broadcaster deal running to 2032. Yle showed all of the Olympic ice hockey live and free. | The national public broadcaster, free, geo-locked to its own country. RÚV carried roughly 300 hours of the Milano Cortina Games in the clear. |
| France | The Games are on France’s listed-events list, so the significant moments must be available free and live. The full multi-channel coverage is a pay product. | france.tv is the public broadcaster’s free platform, geo-locked to France. We could not confirm from our research which parts of the Games it carries. |
| Italy | Rai is the free route. The pay coverage sat with DAZN Italia, which carries the Eurosport channels and showed the Milano Cortina Games on them. | RaiPlay and Rai 1/2/3, free, geo-locked to Italy. Italy’s list of protected events names the Olympics and Paralympics outright, and free access must reach at least 80% of the population. |
| Spain | RTVE carries the free coverage; the pay coverage sits inside the general sports packages. | RTVE Play, free, geo-locked to Spain. |
| Canada | The Canadian rights sit with the national broadcasters for the Games themselves. | CBC Gem, free and ad-supported, carries an Olympic Channel stream. |
| United States | NBC holds the Games and streams them on Peacock. Note that the cheaper Peacock tier carries no live sport at all. | None confirmed. There is no public-broadcaster equivalent in the US, so the Games are a paid product there. |
| Australia | Seven carries the Olympics, on television and on its streaming platform. | 7plus, free and ad-supported. |
| Latin America | Claro Sports has the Games from Milano Cortina 2026 onward; ViX carried the Milano Cortina Games with a free tier and a Premium one. | Claro Sports, free, on its own site and YouTube channel — geo-locked to the region. |
| India | The Olympic Games are on India’s mandatory-sharing list, which requires the live signal to be shared with the state broadcaster. We could not confirm which pay service holds the Indian rights to the Games. | Doordarshan and DD Sports, free-to-air and on DD Free Dish. |
| Japan | The Japan Consortium — NHK plus the commercial networks, TVer and others — holds the Games, the Paralympics, the World Cup and the Asian Games. | NHK and the commercial networks, free-to-air. |
| South Korea | KBS, SBS and MBC carry the Games free-to-air; TVING holds the streaming rights to the 2026 Winter Games and the Summer Games from 2028. | KBS, SBS and MBC, free-to-air. |
| China | CCTV runs the national coverage, with CCTV-16 as its dedicated Olympic channel. | CCTV, free-to-air, with no login shown and a free stream on its own site and app. Note that it blocks overseas IP addresses. |
The other multi-sport events
The Games are not the only event of this kind. The Commonwealth Games, the Asian Games and the regional Games are all multi-sport packages, and they follow the same logic: a host-region broadcaster takes them, and the countries that protect them by law get a free slice.
| Event | Who shows it | Free option |
|---|---|---|
| Asian Games 2026 | Aichi-Nagoya, which began on 19 September 2026. Sony Sports Ten 1 and SonyLIV carry it in India; Cignal is the official broadcaster in the Philippines; beIN Sports has it across the MENA region; ELTA TV has it in Taiwan; the Japan Consortium covers it in Japan; CCTV carries it in China; PPTV HD 36 carries it in Thailand. | Several routes. PPTV HD 36 is free-to-air in Thailand, One Sports is free-to-air in the Philippines, Doordarshan shares the signal in India under the mandatory-sharing list, and CCTV is free in China. Australian and Korean readers should check their own listings — we could not confirm either. |
| Commonwealth Games | Glasgow 2026, which began on 23 July 2026. In India, Sony Sports carried the paid feed. | In India, selected events, the opening ceremony and highlights were free on DD Sports and DD Free Dish, because the Commonwealth Games are on the mandatory-sharing list. Outside India we could not confirm the rights holder. |
| Paralympic Games | Coverage varies more than for the Olympics. In the UK the free coverage we could confirm came from Channel 4, whose sport YouTube channel ran eight free live streams of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Paralympics. | France, Italy and Denmark all list the Paralympics among their protected events, alongside the Olympics. In the UK the free route was Channel 4 rather than the BBC. |
| SEA Games | There is no SEA Games in 2026. The 33rd edition was hosted by Thailand in December 2025, and the 34th goes to Malaysia in 2027. | None confirmed, because there is no edition to watch in 2026. Regional Games are normally carried by the host country’s free-to-air broadcasters. |
Can you watch it free?
More reliably than in any other category on this site, and for a structural reason rather than a generous one. Broadcasters pay for the Games in a single enormous cheque, and governments then require that a substantial part of it be shown free, because a Games is the one sporting event almost everybody watches.
- Public broadcasters. ARD and ZDF, the BBC, SRF, Rai, RTVE, France Télévisions, the Nordic broadcasters, RÚV, NHK, KBS/SBS/MBC and CCTV all carry the Games free at the point of use. Every one of them is geo-locked to its own country.
- The free share is partial, not total. The BBC’s package is real but it does not include every session; the rest is the pay broadcaster’s. Treat “free Olympics” as meaning the main events, not all 329 of them.
- Canada and Australia. CBC Gem and 7plus are free, ad-supported and need no subscription, which makes them among the cheapest Games coverage anywhere.
- India. Doordarshan is free by statute for the Games, the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games, whether or not the pay broadcaster is happy about it.
- Latin America. Claro Sports streams the Games free on its own platforms, geo-locked to the region.
The cheapest legal route
- Germany, Switzerland and the Nordics. Nothing. ARD and ZDF, SRF, DR, SVT, NRK, Yle and RÚV come with the licence fee or tax you already pay, and need no account.
- UK. BBC iPlayer for the free package, with a TV licence; the HBO Max tier only if you specifically want the sessions the BBC does not carry.
- Canada. CBC Gem, free, with no card.
- Australia. 7plus, free, with no card.
- India. DD Sports free for the must-share events. If you want the full multi-channel feed, SonyLIV is about ₹399 a month or ₹1,499 a year.
- Latin America. Claro Sports, free.
One warning before you buy anything for a multi-sport event: the subscription you are looking at is almost never sold as “the Games”. It is sold as a general sports tier that happens to include them, and it will still be there, at the same price, in the three years between Games.
