Handball — Where to Watch

Handball is a European sport in its rights geography as much as in its playing strength. The club game is organised around the EHF Champions League and the domestic leagues of Denmark, Germany, France, Spain, Hungary, Poland and the Balkans. The national-team calendar runs through the World and European championships, which are the two events non-fans actually watch. Outside Europe there is very little handball on television at all.

That concentration has one advantage for a viewer: in the countries where handball is a major sport, the coverage is good and often cheap. In the countries where it is not, an honest guide should say so rather than pad a table out.

CountryWho shows itFree option
Denmark TV 2 Play and TV 2 Sport carry the men’s and women’s domestic leagues, the EHF Champions League, and the World and European championships. This is the deepest handball coverage of any market we checked. DR TV carries the World Championship free. Denmark’s new listed-events list, effective 1 January 2027, covers Denmark’s men’s and women’s World and European championship matches plus the semi-finals and finals, and the qualifiers.
Norway No dedicated handball subscription is confirmed in our research. The rights sit with pay television in a market where the national teams are the main draw. Norway’s listed-events rules cover the men’s handball World and European championships. The list was extended on 9 December 2025 with effect from 1 January 2026, so this protection is recent.
Germany Dyn carries the Handball-Bundesliga from 2023/24 onwards, alongside the sports it describes as “beyond football”. We could not confirm Dyn’s pricing from a source, so check it directly. ARD and ZDF carry the national team’s games free — useful for the World and European championships, but not for the league.
France Handball in France sits on pay television. We could not confirm the current domestic rights holder. Listed events, but narrowly: the semi-finals and finals of the European and World championships, and only when France takes part.
Spain No handball broadcaster is confirmed in our research. Movistar Plus+ and DAZN, which hold most Spanish sport, have no confirmed handball rights. Spain’s listed-events catalogue may include the handball World and European championships, but no permanent catalogue had been approved as of the consolidated text we checked, and the transitional rule limits the hard free-to-air duty to a much narrower set of events. Do not count on handball being free in Spain.
Poland No handball broadcaster is confirmed in our research. Men’s handball is on Poland’s listed-events list: the semi-finals and finals of the World and European championships, plus Poland’s other matches there including the qualifiers. The newest version of that list enters into force on 11 September 2027.
Balkans Arena Sport lists the EHF Champions League, the EHF Women’s Champions League, the EHF European League and the EHF European Cup, the IHF Men’s Super Globe, the German Handball-Bundesliga, the Hungarian and Polish leagues, the Slovenian and Serbian leagues, and the SEHA League. Sport Klub, which now survives only in Croatia and Slovenia, lists the German Bundesliga and the Hungarian league. None confirmed. The national public broadcasters exist and are free, but what live sport they carry in 2026 is unverified.
Turkey beIN Sports’ own rights list includes France’s LNH Division 1. None confirmed.
The Balkan rows come with a health warning. Arena Sport and Sport Klub rights lists are crowd-edited and carry per-country exceptions — the same competition can be on Arena Sport in Serbia and on Sport Klub in Slovenia. Use them to know where to look, not as proof that a specific match is available to you.

Can you watch it free?

In three countries, yes, and in the rest of Europe almost never. Denmark is the clearest case: DR carries the World Championship free, and the country’s listed-events list protects the national team’s World and European championship matches from 2027. Germany puts the national team on ARD and ZDF. Norway has protected the men’s World and European championships since January 2026.

Elsewhere the free layer is the protected final weekend and nothing more. For France that means the semi-finals and finals, and only when France is involved. For Poland it means the same stage of the same competitions, plus Poland’s own matches — from September 2027. For Spain, do not assume anything.

“Listed” does not mean “guaranteed free”. The mechanism only obliges a pay rights-holder to offer the event to a free broadcaster on reasonable terms. If no free broadcaster bids, the event can stay behind a subscription. The documented case is the 2006 men’s European championship final, which was shown only on Canal+.

The cheapest legal route

One practical warning about the club game: the EHF’s competitions, the domestic leagues and the national-team championships are three separate sets of rights. A subscription advertised as handball in a given country usually means one or two of the three, not all of them.

Where is handball shown on television?
It is a European sport and the coverage follows that. Denmark (TV 2 Play), Germany (Dyn for the league, ARD and ZDF for the national team) and the Balkans (Arena Sport and Sport Klub) have the deepest coverage. Outside Europe we could not confirm a handball broadcaster at all.
Can I watch handball for free?
In a few markets. DR in Denmark carries the World Championship, ARD and ZDF in Germany carry the national team, and Norway protects the men’s World and European championships. France and Poland protect the semi-finals and finals only, and only when their own team is involved.
Does a listed-events guarantee mean handball is free?
No. The rules oblige a pay broadcaster to offer the event to a free broadcaster, but if nobody bids the event can stay behind a subscription. The 2006 men’s European championship final was only on Canal+ in France, which is the clearest precedent.
Why is there so little handball outside Europe?
Because the rights are sold market by market and the demand is concentrated in Europe. There is no global handball package comparable to a football or tennis season pass, so a broadcaster outside Europe has to buy the sport from scratch for a small audience.
