Watch Sports Without Cable

Dropping cable used to mean losing sport. That stopped being true some years ago, and the replacement market is now mature enough to be confusing in its own right. There are three distinct models, and they are not interchangeable.

Two of them cost roughly what cable did. One of them is free. Getting this wrong is how people end up paying more than they did before.

The three replacement models

ModelWhat it isExamples
Live-TV streaming bundle The closest thing to cable without a cable. A package of live channels, delivered over the internet, usually carrying the same sports networks the cable box did. Fubo, YouTube TV, Sling and Hulu + Live TV in the US; NOW and Sky Stream in the UK and Italy; WOW in Germany; Kayo in Australia; TSN and Sportsnet+ in Canada.
The league pass You buy the competition rather than the channels. Often cheaper than a bundle, and usually better if you follow one sport. NFL Game Pass on DAZN outside the US, NBA League Pass, MLB.TV, F1 TV, and Paramount+ for the Champions League in the US.
The free-to-air app Replaces the terrestrial channels you used to get with an aerial, and nothing more. BBC iPlayer, ITVX, CBC Gem, ABC iview, SBS On Demand, 9Now, TVNZ+ and similar.

What the paid routes actually cost

Prices below are the ones published by the services themselves. They move, and they move unevenly by country, so treat them as a starting point.

One price to watch. Sportsnet+ in Canada was priced at about CAD 29.99/month and CAD 249.99/year, with a reported increase taking effect on 22 September 2026. If you are reading this around that date, check the current figure before you commit to an annual plan.

What you give up

Cutting the cord is not free of trade-offs, and the honest ones rarely get listed.

Choosing between them

One service in particular is worth understanding before you assume it covers you: DAZN operates in far more countries than people think and carries local domestic football in far fewer than people think. There is a country-by-country breakdown here.

Can I watch live sport without a cable or satellite subscription?
Yes. Three routes: a live-TV streaming bundle such as Fubo, YouTube TV, NOW or Kayo; a league pass such as NFL Game Pass, NBA League Pass or F1 TV; or a public broadcaster's free app for whatever is free-to-air where you are.
Is streaming sport cheaper than cable?
Not automatically. A full live-TV bundle in the US costs about what a cable package did. The savings come from the other two models — a league pass, or a day pass for occasional viewing.
Why can I not watch my local team on a league pass?
Because league passes sell out-of-market games. Local and nationally televised games are blacked out live and made available later, and regional sports blackouts still apply in the US.
Does NFL Game Pass show every game live?
Not quite. Outside the US it is the full-season product, but in the UK two Sunday games are carried on a 24-hour tape delay. Check your market's terms before subscribing. In Canada, Game Pass is included with the DAZN subscription rather than sold separately.
What is the cheapest way to replace cable for sport?
If your sport is free-to-air where you live, a public broadcaster app costs nothing. If it is not, a day pass or a monthly rolling subscription avoids both the contract and the renewal.
