Cheap Ways to Watch Sports
Sports subscriptions are sold the way gyms sell memberships: the headline price is for the version most people do not need, and the cheap routes are deliberately quiet. There are five of them, and none involves anything unlicensed.
1. Day passes
If you want one match or one weekend, a day pass is almost always the right product. It has no contract, nothing to cancel, and no card kept on file.
| Pass | Market | Price |
|---|---|---|
| NOW day membership | UK | £14.99 for 24 hours of the Sky Sports channels |
| Sky Sport Now day pass | New Zealand | NZD 29.99 for 24 hours |
| Sling day passes | US | USD 4.99 for one day, 9.99 for three, 14.99 for seven |
The arithmetic is straightforward: a day pass is cheaper than a month whenever you are watching fewer than about two weekends a month. It is worse than a month the moment you are not.
2. Monthly rolling instead of a fixed term
Almost every sports service charges less per month on a long contract and more per month without one. The gap is real, but so is the value of being able to stop.
- DAZN — from about £15.99/month on a 12-month plan, or £25.99/month flex. The flex price buys you the ability to leave in any month.
- NOW (UK) — £34.99/month fully flexible, against a cheaper 12-month saver rate.
- NOW (Italy) — Pass Sport at €19.99/month with a 12-month commitment, or €29.99/month with no lock-in.
- WOW (Germany) — Live-Sport at €44.99/month monthly, against €29.99/month for the first year on a 12-month term.
- Sky UK — an F1-only add-on is about £15/month on a 31-day rolling contract, which is the cheapest way into Sky's sport without the 24-month commitment.
3. When the annual plan genuinely wins
Annual plans are not automatically a trap. Where the discount is large and you know you will keep watching, they are the cheapest per month by a wide margin.
- TNT Sports via HBO Max — about £30.99/month standalone, or a 12-month saver at twelve payments of £25.99. That is the cheapest route to the Champions League in the UK.
- DAZN — about £119.99/year, against twelve months at the flex price, which is nearly £192. The annual plan is over a third cheaper.
- FanCode (India) — an unlimited livestream pass reported at INR 199/month or INR 1,499/year, covering LaLiga, the EFL, AFC club competitions and selected motorsport.
- Tapmad (Pakistan) — PKR 499 for a full auto-renewing month, with step-down options of PKR 250 for fifteen days and PKR 150 for seven before the first renewal.
4. Buy the competition, not the bundle
This is the biggest saving available to most people and the least used. A league pass costs a fraction of a channel package, because you are not paying for the channels you never open.
- NBA League Pass — about USD 16.99/month for one device with commercials, or USD 24.99 for the premium tier. Nationally televised games are blacked out live and appear after 6am ET the next day.
- NFL Game Pass on DAZN — in the UK about £179.99 for the season, or about £16.99 for a single week. In Canada it is included with a DAZN subscription rather than sold separately.
- F1 TV — sold standalone in many markets, which is usually cheaper than adding a whole sports package for one race weekend a fortnight.
5. Pick the cheapest tier that still has sport in it
This is where money is most often wasted, because the entry-level tier of a sports service frequently contains no sport at all.
| Trap | What happens |
|---|---|
| Peacock Select | The cheapest tier explicitly excludes live sports. You need Premium to get the football or Sunday Night Football. |
| DStv cheaper tiers | Only Premium carries every SuperSport channel. Family carries one channel, and Access carries none — so the cheap tiers are inexpensive for a reason. |
| ViX | The free tier is real but carries less than Premium, and the biggest matches sit behind the paid one. |
| DAZN Italy | Cheaper than the full plan is the football-only tier, from about €19.99/month — if football is all you want, the top tier is wasted money. |
The cheapest option is free, and it is not a trick
Before any of the above, check whether the thing you want is already free where you are. Public broadcasters, permanent free tiers and listed events cover more than most people assume. Start at free live sports streams and free-to-air sports by country.
What to be careful of
- Auto-renewal. Annual plans renew silently at the full rate. Diarise the date, do not rely on a reminder email.
- Long contracts on a service you are testing. A 24-month term on a service you have not used is the most expensive mistake in this market.
- Bundles. A sports add-on is usually cheaper than the package it is bundled into, unless you genuinely want the broadband or the entertainment channels too.
- Extrapolating from another country. The same brand carries completely different sport in different markets, at different prices. Check the terms for where you actually live — DAZN by country is the clearest example.
