AFL — Where to Watch
The AFL is the clearest case on this site of a domestic competition that is essentially one subscription. There is no international rights market to speak of, no regional split inside the country, and no package deal with a second broadcaster. If you are in Australia and you want a full season, the answer is Kayo, and the question is only what it costs.
Because of that, three things are worth knowing before you pay anything: which service actually owns the rights, what Australian law keeps free, and what happens if you are outside the country.
| Country | Who shows it | Free option |
|---|---|---|
| Australia | Kayo Sports, through the Fox Sports channels. Every AFL match is on Kayo. Seven also carries AFL as a free-to-air broadcaster, but the free coverage is a selection of matches rather than the season. | 7plus, free and ad-supported, carries AFL coverage. Australian anti-siphoning rules keep the biggest events off an exclusive paywall, so expect the marquee fixtures free and the bulk of the season behind the subscription. |
| New Zealand | Sky Sport NZ carries Australian sport among its rights, on Sky Sport Now. | None confirmed for the AFL specifically. |
| United States, Canada, UK, Ireland, Europe | Not confirmed in our research. The AFL sells its international rights market by market and the deals are small and change often, so we are not naming a broadcaster for any of these. | None confirmed. |
The Kayo route, and the thing people get wrong
DAZN bought Foxtel, and the deal completed on 2 April 2025. Since then the Australian business runs through the Foxtel brands — Kayo, BINGE and Hubbl — which means there is no such thing as a “DAZN Australia” subscription. People search for it, guides mention it, and it does not exist. You subscribe to Kayo.
Kayo renamed its plans and raised its prices on 5 February 2026. Kayo One became Standard and Kayo Basic became Premium, so any guide quoting “Kayo One” or “Kayo Basic” is describing a plan that no longer exists under that name. Standard is about A$29.99 a month and Premium about A$45.99, and there is no standard free trial — eligible newcomers have been offered a seven-day trial or a first month for a dollar, but that is a promotion rather than a permanent feature, so check at signup.
Can you watch it free?
Partly, and by law rather than by generosity. Australia runs an anti-siphoning regime: a list of events that must be offered to free-to-air broadcasters before a pay service can take them exclusively. That is why 7plus carries AFL coverage at all, and it is the reason a free-to-air broadcaster has a share of the competition in a market where the pay service would otherwise own all of it.
What anti-siphoning does not do is cover the season. It protects events, not rounds, and it stops a paywall from taking everything exclusively rather than requiring the free broadcaster to show everything. So the honest description is this: some AFL on 7plus, free, with a free account; most of the season on Kayo, paid.
Outside Australia there is no free route we could confirm at all, because there is barely a paid one — the AFL’s international rights are thin and sold market by market.
The cheapest legal route
- In Australia, free. 7plus with a free account. Check what it is carrying before assuming it covers the match you want.
- In Australia, paid. Kayo Standard at about A$29.99 a month is the entry point to a full AFL season. Premium adds features rather than matches, so if you only want the AFL, Standard is the one to compare against.
- One month, not twelve. Kayo is sold monthly, which suits a sport with a defined season far better than an annual commitment.
- Outside Australia. We could not confirm a legal option for most countries, so we are not going to invent one.
