Rugby — Where to Watch
Rugby union and rugby league are sold completely separately, and mixing the two up is the first mistake most guides make. Rugby union splits again into three products: the international game, the club game in Europe, and the domestic leagues of the southern hemisphere. Rugby league, in the UK at least, is one product on one broadcaster.
The reason rugby is friendlier to viewers than football is the Six Nations. It is treated as a protected event in the UK, so the whole tournament is free to air — not highlights, not a few matches, all fifteen games.
| Country | Who shows it | Free option |
|---|---|---|
| UK | Premier Sports carries the Champions Cup and the URC. TNT Sports has Premiership rugby and the autumn Nations Series. Sky Sports carries rugby league, including the Super League. | The entire Six Nations: BBC has 5 matches to 2029, ITV has 10 including every England game, and S4C has Wales matches in Welsh. All free. |
| Ireland | Premier Sports Ireland carries the Champions Cup, the URC and TOP 14; it is a separate company from Premier Sports in the UK and needs a separate subscription. TG4 and RT&E cover the domestic game. | Six Nations on RT&E, and GAA on RT&E and TG4. |
| France | Canal+ holds TOP 14 and Pro D2. | French law is unusually generous here: all matches of the France rugby team, the whole Six Nations, the Top 14 finals and the World Cup semi-finals and finals must be free to air. |
| Italy | Rugby’s Italian rights are held by a mix of national and pay broadcasters; we could not verify the current holder with confidence. | Italy’s Six Nations matches fall under the country’s listed-events rules and must be shown free. |
| Australia | Kayo Sports carries Super Rugby and the Wallabies; Stan Sport carries rugby alongside its football rights. | None confirmed. |
| New Zealand | Sky Sport carries Super Rugby, the NPC and the All Blacks. | TVNZ+ carries provincial rugby, including the Farah Palmer Cup, free with an account. |
| South Africa | SuperSport on DStv. Only the Premium tier carries Springbok rugby — the cheaper tiers drop it entirely, so check before you buy. | None confirmed. |
Can you watch it free?
The Six Nations, in the UK and Ireland, in full. That is unusual enough to be worth stating plainly: every one of the fifteen matches is on free television, shared between the BBC and ITV, with Wales games also on S4C in Welsh. The BBC’s share is contracted to 2029. In France the protection goes further still, extending to every match of the national team, the Top 14 finals, and the semi-finals and finals of the Rugby World Cup.
Everything else is mostly paid. The Champions Cup and the URC sit behind Premier Sports, the southern hemisphere competitions behind Stan Sport and Sky Sport, and the domestic English game behind TNT Sports. New Zealanders get provincial rugby free on TVNZ+, which is a genuine exception rather than a pattern.
The cheapest legal route
- Six Nations only. Nothing. BBC, ITV and S4C, for as long as the current deals run.
- Club rugby in Europe. Premier Sports at £13.99 a month on a 12-month term, or £18.99 monthly. It is the cheapest paid option in this market and it carries both the Champions Cup and the URC.
- Autumn internationals and the Premiership. TNT Sports, through HBO Max at around £30.99 a month.
- Super Rugby. Stan Sport in Australia, at about A$20 a month as an add-on to a Stan base plan — and there is no free trial.
- Rugby league. Sky Sports in the UK; a NOW day pass at £14.99 is the cheapest way to watch a single match day without a contract.
A warning about the southern hemisphere. Rights there are tied up with the Super Rugby competition and the national unions, and the arrangement has changed several times in recent years, including one major service closing down entirely in 2023. If you are reading a guide that names a broadcaster for Super Rugby and that broadcaster no longer exists, the rest of the guide is probably stale too.
