Primeira Liga — Where to Watch
Liga Portugal Betclic, still better known outside Portugal as the Primeira Liga, is unusual in one specific way. Most European leagues are sold as one package to one broadcaster, and everything else is resale. Portugal splits the domestic market between the league’s main broadcaster and the clubs themselves, so even a viewer in Lisbon who pays for the biggest sports package in the country is not guaranteed every match.
Sport TV holds 272 of the 306 matches. Beyond that, Benfica sells its home matches on its own channel, BTV, and Moreirense’s home matches sit with TVI and its V+ service. That structure is worth understanding before you buy anything, because it explains why the league can be on two different channels on the same weekend.
| Country | Who shows it | Free option |
|---|---|---|
| Portugal | Sport TV, which carries 272 of 306 matches plus the Liga Portugal Meu Super and the Allianz Cup, which it holds exclusively. Benfica’s home matches are on BTV, and Moreirense’s home matches are on TVI and V+ | None. We could not confirm a single free-to-air league match in Portugal — see below |
| France | beIN Sports, which lost Ligue 1, LaLiga and Serie A but kept Liga Portugal in its football portfolio | None confirmed |
| Italy | DAZN, whose Italian storefront lists Liga Portugal Betclic. DAZN Italia carries Serie A, LaLiga, the Bundesliga and the Jupiler Pro League as well | DAZN’s Italian free tier includes selected live Liga Portugal matches, with a free account and no subscription |
| Belgium | DAZN Belgium lists Primeira Liga among its football rights | DAZN Belgium runs a permanent Freemium tier for cup football and highlights, not for this league |
| Switzerland | blue Sport, inside a portfolio that also has the Champions League, LaLiga, the Eredivisie and the Saudi Pro League | None — blue Sport runs an introductory price for new annual subscribers rather than a free trial |
| Poland | Eleven Sports, which is still branded Eleven in Poland and holds Liga Portugal Betclic alongside the Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1 | None confirmed |
| Balkans | Arena Sport across Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and North Macedonia. Sport Klub lists it for Croatia and Slovenia. Both are crowd-edited rights lists with per-country exceptions, so confirm with the broadcaster | None confirmed |
| UK, Ireland, US, Canada, Australia, Brazil, India | Not confirmed in our research | None confirmed |
Can you watch it free?
No, and this is worth stating flatly because Portugal is often mistaken for Spain. Spain obliges its broadcasters to show one LaLiga match per matchday in the clear. Portugal has a comparable listed-events law and it deliberately does not work that way: the Portuguese list covers the Taça de Portugal and Taça da Liga finals, matches of the national team, one Champions League match per round involving a Portuguese club, one Europa or Conference League match per round involving a Portuguese team, the Volta a Portugal, the Rally de Portugal and the Portuguese MotoGP Grand Prix. The domestic league is not on it.
There is a second thing to be careful about. TVI is a free-to-air channel and it does carry Moreirense’s home matches through its V+ service, which makes it look like a free route to league football. Our research is explicit that no weekly free-to-air Liga Portugal match exists in Portugal, so we are not counting it as one.
- Canal 11 — free, and included at no extra cost in the MEO, NOS, NOWO and Vodafone line-ups. It is the Portuguese Football Federation’s own channel and it carries the national teams, Liga 3, the Taça de Portugal and futsal. It does not hold Liga Portugal Betclic rights.
- RTP Play — free, and genuinely useful for other sport: the volleyball European Championship, the women’s FIBA World Cup and Portugal’s World Cup 2026 matches on RTP1. No league football.
- DAZN Portugal’s free tier — free with registration, but built around Formula 1 free practice, women’s football, one NFL game a week and highlights. No league football.
- Italy — the one place we found free Portuguese league football. DAZN’s Italian free tier includes selected live Liga Portugal matches, and it needs only a free account.
The cheapest legal route
- Portugal — the list price is Sport TV Standard at €24.99/month, with multiscreen at €29.99 and Total at €34.99, and there are no annual discounts. The savings are in operator promotions rather than in the subscription itself: NOS has offered three to six months free, or nine months at €1/month on a bundle; MEO gives one month free for 1,000 MEOS points; and Vodafone Clube Viva has run 700 points for three months of multiscreen at €21.98. If you are already an operator customer, that is where to look.
- Portugal, before you buy — check whether the package covers the matches you actually want. Sport TV does not have Benfica’s home matches or Moreirense’s, and BTV is a separate subscription.
- Note for NOWO customers — Sport TV is not sold on NOWO at all, which removes the main route to the league if that is your operator.
- Italy — check DAZN’s free tier first. It carries selected live Liga Portugal matches at no cost, which is more than Portugal’s own free options offer.
- France, Belgium, Switzerland, Poland — the league is one item in a broad football package in each of these markets. Value it against the rest of the bundle rather than on its own.
Why the league is split at home
Portugal is a small market with three very large clubs, and that combination shapes its rights. A single broadcaster can afford most of the league but not all of it, and the clubs that can sell their own matches do so, because a club channel converts a national audience into a direct subscription. The result is a market where the pay broadcaster, the biggest club and a free-to-air network each hold a slice. For a viewer it means the honest advice is to check the fixture list against your package rather than to assume a football subscription covers Portuguese football.
