Horse Racing — Where to Watch
Horse racing behaves unlike any other sport in this guide, for one structural reason: its coverage is tied to betting. In several countries the racing channels are owned or funded by betting operators, the pictures are sold to bookmakers as a product, and the free-to-air coverage exists mostly for the handful of meetings the whole country watches. That makes the sport unusually hard to write about accurately, and it is why this page is shorter than the others.
There is also a live-streaming layer that sits entirely outside broadcasting. Most major racing jurisdictions offer race replays and, in some cases, live pictures through their own websites or apps, subject to account and betting requirements. We could not verify those terms in every market, so we have not listed them as free options.
| Country | Who shows it | Free option |
|---|---|---|
| UK | ITV Racing carries the flagship meetings, with Sky Sports Racing and Racing TV, a separate subscription channel, covering the rest of the calendar. | ITV Racing on ITVX, free with advertising. Our research names Cheltenham, the Grand National, Royal Ascot and the Derby as the meetings it carries, but we could not confirm the exact 2026 scope, so treat the list as indicative rather than complete. |
| Ireland | None confirmed. We could not verify which Irish broadcaster holds racing rights. | None confirmed. ITVX is geo-blocked to the UK. |
| Japan | ABEMA carries JRA horse racing, in the same service as its sumo and football coverage. | ABEMA’s basic tier is free, and racing sits within it. Premium, which removes advertising and adds content, is ¥1,180 a month. |
| Hong Kong | i-CABLE closed its pay-television service on 1 June 2023 and moved its racing channel to streaming. The racing product is now a 24-hour racing OTT service plus a dedicated racing app, promoted together at HK$88 a month. | None confirmed. The Hong Kong Jockey Club lists video and radio on its own site, but whether the live video is free or account-gated was not something we could verify. |
| Qatar & the Gulf | Al Kass, the Qatari sports broadcaster, carries horse racing alongside its football. Dubai Racing is carried in beIN’s free-to-air channel group. | Al Kass and Dubai Racing are both free-to-air channels, so in the Gulf the sport is available without a subscription. Whether their streaming services carry the same races free is unconfirmed. |
| India | Sony Sports Ten 1 lists horse racing among the sports on its English channel. | None confirmed. Sony’s channels are sold through SonyLIV, which does not advertise a free trial. |
| Elsewhere | None confirmed. We found no citable source for the rights holder in the United States, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain or South Africa. | None confirmed. |
Can you watch it free?
In three places we can name, and one of them is conditional. In the UK, ITV Racing is free on ITVX and carries the meetings that matter most to a British audience — the Grand National, Royal Ascot, Cheltenham and the Derby are the ones our research names, though we could not pin down the full 2026 list. In Japan, ABEMA carries JRA racing on a free tier. In the Gulf, Al Kass and Dubai Racing are free-to-air channels.
Everywhere else, racing is either a paid channel or a service tied to a betting account. That is a real difference from the other sports on this site, and it is worth saying plainly rather than filling the gaps with guesses.
The cheapest legal route
- UK. ITVX, free with advertising, for the flagship meetings. It needs no card and no subscription.
- Japan. ABEMA’s free basic tier for JRA racing. Premium costs ¥1,180 a month if you want the advertising removed.
- The Gulf. Al Kass and Dubai Racing are free-to-air, so no subscription is involved at all.
- Everywhere else. We could not verify a price worth quoting. Racing subscriptions are often sold by the meeting or bundled with a betting account, and those terms vary by operator — so the honest answer is to check the broadcaster’s own page.
One caution about the dedicated racing channels. A subscription to one of them usually buys you the day-to-day calendar, not the meetings that are on free television, because those are sold separately. Check which meetings you actually want before subscribing to a year of anything.
| Service | Available in | What it carries | Price | Free trial | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ITVXverify | GB | World Cup 2026, FA Cup, Six Nations, England internationals, horse racing, Super Bowl, 10 live EFL matches | Free, or about GBP 5.99/month for ad-free | Not applicable — the free tier needs no card | No link yet |
